Why a giving culture is important to SAF

Your tax deductible contribution can assist SAF in advancing the science, education, technology and practice of forestry and enhancing public understanding of the great work of foresters. In today's world, giving has become critical to the financial health of most non-profit organizations. For more information on why your contributions are so important to SAF, read the article, A Giving Culture Takes Hold.

Annual Giving

Annual giving is based on what you believe you can contribute to the Society during a specific year. This could be in the form of a single payment or a pledge for payment over several months. It is the same as when your forestry school calls you and asks for a gift for that year.

How do I make an annual gift?
  • By giving on line
Our website is secure and trustworthy for processing gifts online to SAF. Your tax-deductible gifts go directly to our Finance and Administration Department for processing. We have provided an online form and a printable PDF form for mailing. You may click here to get Adobe's free reader.

  • By sending a check
You may make a tax deductible contribution to SAF by writing a check and sending it directly to the Society of American Foresters, Attn: Annual Giving, 5400 Grosvenor Lane, Bethesda, MD 20814. Your contribution will be acknowledged for tax purposes.

  • Employer Matching Gifts
Ask your employer if they will match your annual gift, doubling your contribution. Your employer will provide the forms for this purpose.

Planned Giving for the Society of American Foresters

What will your Legacy be?

Planned gifts provide creative and flexible strategies for your estate and charitable planning. Some planned gifts provide you with income. Many of them can reduce your taxes. The greatest benefit, however, lies in knowing you are supporting work at the Society of American Foresters that is important to you and helpful to others.

Whatever inspires you, whatever drives you — you can make a difference by supporting the Society of American Foresters with a bequest directed at any purpose, national program, state society or division, local chapter, or fund. Whether it’s helping tell the forestry story at the local or national level, providing support to science and education efforts, or helping to inform decision-makers at multiple levels, by including the SAF in your estate plans, you will help to promote new ideas and create the next generation of leaders, thinkers and doers, benefiting our way of life here in the America’s and beyond.

We’d be happy to discuss your options with you or your adviser. For more information or to schedule a time to meet, please contact us.

Bequests

You can include a gift to the SAF in your will or trust.

Official bequest language for the SAF

"I give to the COUNCIL OF THE Society of American Foresters, Bethesda, Maryland (the "SAF") _______________ Dollars ($____________)

[alternate 1:] _____________ percent (______%) of the residue of my estate.

[alternate 2:] all of the residue of my estate.

[alternate 3:] specific asset for (purpose) by (SAF State Society/Chapter/SAF Fund/Other).

If you are considering a bequest and want help with specific language, a member of the SAF staff will be happy to work with you or your adviser to ensure your gift does exactly what you intend.

If you’ve already made a provision in your will or trust or have named the SAF as a beneficiary of your retirement plan, IRA or life insurance policy, we invite you to contact us so we can welcome you as a member of the Founders’ Circle. If you would prefer to remain anonymous your gift will be kept confidential.

Gifts that pay you income

With planning you can receive an immediate income tax deduction, provide yourself or someone else with an annual income and support the Society of American Foresters in a meaningful way.

Charitable Gift Annuity
In exchange for a gift of cash, stocks or bonds, the SAF will pay you or a loved one a fixed income for life. The payments are based on the amount of the gift, whether one or two individuals will receive payments and those individuals' ages when the annuity is created.

Charitable Remainder Trust
You and the SAF enter into a trust agreement. You contribute assets to the trust for a purpose you designate, the SAF manages the trust’s assets for your benefit and you receive income from the trust each year for life or a term of years. When the trust ends, the remaining trust assets benefit the purpose you have chosen.

Pooled Income Fund
Your gift to the SAF’s pooled income fund is combined with the contributions of others. You receive annual payments based on the fund’s performance and your share of the pool. At your death the SAF withdraws your share of the fund’s assets to support your chosen purpose.

Gifts the SAF can use today

There are many gifts in addition to cash that the SAF can put to work today. These offer tax benefits (such as an income tax deduction) and the opportunity to support current programs, establish or add to an endowment or provide funding for capital improvements.

Outright gifts
You can make an outright gift of real estate, publicly traded securities, closely held stock, a paid up life insurance policy and other property of value.

Tangible personal property
The SAF encourages gifts of tangible personal property, such as artwork, books, manuscripts, coin and stamp collections, boats and airplanes.

Bargain Sale
If you sell an asset such as real estate to the SAF for less than its current fair market value, you will make a “bargain sale” gift. The difference between the fair market value and the sale price constitutes a charitable gift.

Charitable Lead Trust

A lead trust makes payments to the SAF for a designated period of time to support the purpose you choose. When the trust ends, the remaining assets are paid to you or other beneficiaries. A lead trust helps the SAF now and can reduce the tax cost of transferring valuable assets to family members.

Gifts for the future

These deferred gifts ensure that future generations will benefit from your generosity and legacy.

Retained Life Estates
You can contribute your residence, vacation home or farm now, while retaining the right to use and occupy the property for life. At your death the SAF will own the property in its entirety.

Life Insurance or Retirement Assets
You can name the SAF as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy or your retirement account or IRA and direct your future gift to SAF at the national or local level.

What can be donated?

Real estate
Do you own property that is fully paid off and has appreciated in value? You can deduct the fair market value of the property, avoid all capital gains taxes and remove the asset from your taxable estate. You can also give a personal residence (including a vacation home) or a farm to the SAF and live there just as you do now. Also see our Retained Life Estates brochure.

Life insurance
You can donate a life insurance policy — or simply name the SAF as a beneficiary. Such a gift may help you make a larger gift than you otherwise could. Learn more about gifts of life insurance.

Retirement plan assets
Coordinating retirement planning and charitable giving can be especially beneficial if you’ve accumulated substantial retirement assets and want to reduce income and estate taxes. See our Gifts of Retirement Plan Assets brochure.

Securities
Securities, if they have appreciated, are excellent assets for charitable gifts. These include shares of stocks, bonds or mutual fund units.

Cash
Gifts of cash are perhaps the easiest to make. Charitable Gift Annuities and Charitable Remainder Trusts may be funded with cash.

If you wish to make a one-time cash gift, you can mail a check to:

The Society of American Foresters
5400 Grosvenor Lane
Bethesda, Maryland 20814-2198

Please make your check payable to the Society of American Foresters and indicate which fund or program you wish to support. Or you can make a gift online.
