Duties: Under procedures established by the executive vice-president,
the CFO will direct all financial and administrative activities of the
Society and associated entities. Also, under procedures established by
the executive vice-resident, the CFO will oversee preparation and the
monitoring of budgets, financial statements, and reports; analyze and
improve effectiveness of Society business systems and procedures; serve
as the staff liaison to the finance committee, the investment committee,
and the insurance trust and assist the executive vice-president and Council
in the review and the analysis of all financial matters; oversee and direct
the information technology system; and oversee and direct all human resources
and supporting services.
Education: Minimum of a bachelor's degree (masters preferred) in
finance, accounting, business administration, or a closely related field
is required and advanced education in association management is preferred.
Experience: Minimum of five years experience in a nonprofit organization
setting with strong emphasis in finance or accounting and demonstrated
management experience.
General responsibilities: In addition to such other duties and responsibilities
as may be assigned, the responsibilities of the position include advising
the executive vice-president in the following areas: organizational structure
and staffing; administrative and personnel policies and procedures; financial
affairs of the Society, including the preparation of an annual budget
and long-range forecasts; and oversight of plans for the development for
the generation of nondues revenue.
Specific responsibilities: The CFO will supervise the controller function,
treasury operations, fulfillment of member services, human resource matters,
and other duties as assigned.

Henry Clepper Forest Policy Internship

An internship is available at SAF's national office in natural resource
policy for graduate or upper-level undergraduate students enrolled in
accredited forestry programs, or graduate students in public policy with
a forestry background. Knowledge of the programs, positions, and services
of the Society of American Foresters a plus. The intern will serve as
assistant to the director of forest policy, prepare background reports,
monitor legistation, and provide liasion to other natural resource organizations.
Stipend: $1000 per month.

The Society of American Foresters is seeking an editor for its bimonthly
research journal, Forest Science. The three-year appointment begins April
1, 2004, and includes a stipend. Responsibilities: Forest Science is a
leading broad-based forestry research journal, publishing articles in
all areas of forestry research, including biometrics, ecology, economics,
entomology, genetics, operations research, pathology, physiology, silviculture,
social science, fire science, and soils. The editor, with the assistance
of a volunteer editorial board, oversees the content of the journal and
the review process. The editor works with the SAF associate director of
publications to set the editorial direction of the journal.
Qualifications: Candidates must be members of the Society of American
Foresters, have extensive experience publishing in refereed journals,
maintain a network of professional and scientific colleagues, and be able
to work effectively with reviewers and authors.
