Why Choose a Certified Forester®?
A forester is a uniquely qualified professional, with at least a bachelor's
degree in forestry. A forester learns the art and practice of forestry through
comprehensive scientific and technical coursework and practical field experience.
The Certified Forester® program ensures that foresters meet the profession's
educational requirements, have at least five years of professional forestry
experience, adhere to standards of professional practice, pass a rigorous
competency exam, and participate in continuing education. You can be assured
you are hiring a qualified forester if you hire a CF.
If you own or oversee forested land and have never used a forester, consider
this. A forester can help you assess the value of your forest, increase
wildlife, reduce tax liabilities, improve protection from fire, and prevent
or control harmful insects and diseases. The forester can develop a forest
management plan that starts with your goals and objectives, incorporates
regulatory requirements, identifies government incentive programs for which
you may be eligible, and provides management alternatives and timeframes.
It helps ensure that your forest provides benefits for you and for future
generations and better positions you in the marketplace, potentially making
or saving you money. And your forester will be your advocate as you assess
and implement the plan options.
So when you hire a forester, you can request references, review educational
background, and assess experience or simply ask if that forester has been
certified by the Society of American Foresters' Certified Forester program.
