1. Implied minimum value is calculated as:
a) Treatment Cost/ Treatment Benefit.
b) Treatment Cost/ Probability of a Post Fire Event Occurring without Treatment.
c) Treatment Cost/ Reduced Likelihood of Loss.
2. Wildfire risk is best defined as:
a) the potential of a fire to inflict injury.
b) likelihood of fire times the net value change to the affected resource.
c) the benefit cost ratio of a given activity to protect resources from damage.
3. Utilization of small-diameter trees harvested in southwestern fuels reduction programs cover what percentage of the overall costs of the programs?
a) All costs, with additional revenue.
b) About 50%.
c) A very small percentage
4. In relation to the paper "Determining stand value and log product yields using terrestrial LIDAR and optimal bucking: A case study", which statement is most correct?
a) Total overbark volume estimates based on laser scans were within 2% of actual volume measurements.
b) Estimates of log product yields were better for some stands than others, and this was consistent for both USA and New Zealand Douglas-fir markets.
c) Average stand value estimates were within 7% of actual estimates for both USA and New Zealand Douglas-fir markets.
5. Further refinements are needed before the use of terrestrial lidar combined with optimal bucking systems could be considered to be operational. Two refinements which are NOT required include:
a) faster scanning speeds for the laser equipment and the ability to do 360 degree scans.
b) improved description of work procedures and new approaches for stem quality assessment.
c) improved filtering of laser data to eliminate false positive tree detection and better stem diameter measurements (particular in the upper stem).
6. The GLONASS satellite system is a product of the:
a) European Union.
b) China.
c) Russian Federation.
7. Which of the following may potentially lead to the greatest increase in GPS accuracy?
a) Collecting GPS data during early morning.
b) Using an external antenna.
c) Avoid using satellites from more than one satellite system.
8. Which of the following is not a commonly included component of an ecosystem management approach?
a) A renewed focus on single resource management such as recreation, wildlife, watershed protection, or timber production.
b) Including socio-economic information in decision-making and planning.
c) Systems thinking and understanding multiple ecological scales.
9. Which of the following facets of ecosystem management is most controversial in public land management?
a) Objectives, like forest health, ecological integrity, or ecological sustainability.
b) Management processes, like adaptive management and the integration of multiple types of scientific information.
c) Both the objectives and processes associated with ecosystem management are controversial.
10. Among the research priorities for bark beetles discussed in "USDA Forest Service Bark Beetle Research in the Western United States: Looking towards the future" is:
a) Impact of forest fragmentation.
b) Vegetation management.
c) Road building disturbance.
