Poster Symposia
SAF made its first venture into organized poster symposia at the 2005 National Convention in Ft. Worth. The idea was very well received by presenters and attendees.
How it Works
A working group officer, national committee chair, or other interested person will organize a group of 6 to 10 posters around a specific topic such as “Logging Railroads: History & Possibilities” or “Timber Products Output: A National Perspective on Working Wood.”
The group of posters will be displayed together in the poster area. Each symposium will be assigned a time slot within the 2-hour lunch breaks on Thursday and Friday. During that time, each poster presenter will have a few minutes to summarize the poster and participate in a moderated question and answer session. In Ft. Worth, the audiences for the symposia ranged from 15 to 35 people.
How to Organize a Poster Symposium
If you would like to organize a poster symposium, have the individual poster presenters submit their poster abstract online at http://www.x-cd.com/saf06/abstract.cfm. They should be sure to identify themselves as participants by entering your name in Section 3 where the form says, “Were you referred to by a Working Group or National Committee member (include their name)” and the title of your symposium in Section 4 where the form says, “I am submitting my oral presentation or poster abstract to the following session.”
Poster symposia and individual posters are due by midnight, September 5, 2006.
Individual Posters
Individual poster abstract submissions are encouraged. Individual poster presenters should submit their posters online at http://www.x-cd.com/saf06/abstract.cfm.
Whenever possible, individual posters will be grouped in the Exhibit Hall with posters on similar topics. Individuals are encouraged to be with their posters during the 2-hour lunch breaks and the afternoon refreshment breaks on Thursday and Friday.
Poster symposia and individual poster propsoals are due by midnight, September 5, 2006.
FS&TB Student Poster Award
The SAF Forest Science and Technology Board (FS&TB) will be presenting three Student Poster Awards. All interested graduate and undergraduate students who are the primary author of the poster are eligible for the award. The winners will be announced during the National Science Award segment of the General Session.
Cash awards will be presented to the winners:
First Place – $100
Second Place – $50
Third Place – $25
Judging Criteria
Members of the FS&TB and SAF Working Group Officers will judge the student posters based on the following criteria:
How useful will the content be to foresters?
Were the methods appropriate for the objectives and carefully followed?
Is the text written with a vocabulary, grammar, and sentence length that is easily understood?
Has the material been well proofed for spelling and punctuation?
Is the content well organized and presented with a focal point and logical flow of information?
Is the layout and overall design appealing?
Are graphics (drawings, charts, photographs) used where appropriate; designed and labeled so their meaning is clear; and of high visual quality?
