Breakfast Roundtables

NEW! We’ve developed a networking breakfast featuring 8 roundtable discussions for various business sectors. This event includes a light breakfast.
Each table will have an industry leader to facilitate dialogue.

A Taste of Pittsburgh: Carnegie Museum Reception & TourFriday, October 27th

Don’t miss this special event in a Pittsburgh landmark! Enjoy an evening only for SAF Convention attendees in one of the top museums in the country. Sample some of Pittsburgh’s many ethnic cuisines while you stroll from the ornate marble pillars and crystal chandeliers in the Music Hall Foyer to the North American Wildlife exhibit. Along the way, experience one of the world’s best dinosaur collections, the sparkling Hall of Gems and Minerals, an African tropical forest, and other wonders of the natural world. Another must-see is the Hall of Architecture, a spectacular room with more than 140 replicas of ancient masterpieces – many which no longer exist! As an extra special treat, attendees will be allowed behind-the-scenes in the “bug rooms,” where Carnegie entomologists are working with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to identify new potentially-invasive species of wood-boring beetles.
The evening also includes appetizers and a cash bar.

Lunch with Leaders is back by popular demand! It’s an opportunity for you to hear from a diverse group of leaders about their experiences, leadership styles, and lessons learned.
J. Lopez – For the last 19 years, J. Lopez has had a long and rewarding career with the Forestry Division of the County of Los Angeles Fire Department covering from forest nursery operations and reforestation to the implementation of the forest management practices in accordance to the national, state and county fire plan. This aspect focuses on system analysis methods that assess alternatives to protect assets from unacceptable risk of wildland fire damage. Projects include a combination of fuels reduction, ignition management, fire-safe engineering activities, and forest health to protect public and private assets. Based on observation of human behavior, J. Lopez will discuss the nature of perception.
Mary Coulombe – Mary is the District VII, Allegheny and National Capitol Society’s Council Representative, and Chief of Natural Resources for the Army Corps of Engineers in Washington, DC. Mary’s extensive domestic and international policy career has given her key insights on not only the value of being a leader but on the importance of being an inspired follower. Her experiences in both the public and private sector – from Alaska, to California, to Washington, D.C. – offer valuable suggestions on building a satisfying career.
Monte Simpson – After a longtime career with MeadWestvaco, Monte is now Public Affairs Manager for Weyerhaeuser Corporation, has given him experience and great perspectives in a host of forestry areas: land management, environmental outreach, public relations, landowner assistance, and fiber procurement. Monte is a Registered Forester in two states. He currently serves on several watershed councils and is also on the advisory council for the Georgia Governor’s Land Conservation Partnership. Monte’s interests and wealth of experience will makes his talk about “Leadership During Change” of great interest.

Diversity Reception

Celebrate the strength and importance of diversity in SAF and the forestry profession!
The Diversity Reception aims to celebrate all aspects of diversity in the profession of forestry.
We have a new program this year!
Leaders in both the profession and their organizations are invited to attend to network with students and other professionals in the forestry profession. This exciting event will set the stage for all to become engaged in understanding and showcasing the value and beauty of diversity in SAF.
