Dave Cox, President, Mason, Bruce and Girard, Inc.

Mr. Cox, who has worked as a consulting forester for over 25 years, joined MB&G in 1978 and became a shareholder in 1981. His work involves forest policy and management, economic analysis, long-range planning, timber supply and demand analysis, and appraisals. He served as President of MB&G between 2001-2007. Mr. Cox received a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Forest Business Management from the University of Idaho and a Master of Forestry degree in Forest Economics from Duke University. Following graduate school, Mr. Cox worked for the National Forest Products Association in Washington, D.C., as a forest resource analyst developing policy and position statements. Mr. Cox served from 1969 to 1971 in the U.S. Army in South Vietnam. Upon discharge as a First Lieutenant, Mr. Cox worked for the Industrial Forestry Association in Portland, Oregon, as a forest economist until 1978. His responsibilities included timber management planning, private tree farm management, certification of west coast tree farms, intensive forest management program analysis, timber supply research and policy development, state land use planning, and regional economic analysis. Mr. Cox has been active in forest industry affairs. He has served as the President of Western Forestry & Conservation Association in 1997 and is a still a Board member of this group. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Western Forest Economists, is President of the Oregon Council for Economic Education, and is a member of the Oregon Governor's Council of Economic Advisors. He holds an inactive Oregon real estate license and has taken numerous courses in real estate law, appraisal practices, and is a graduate of the Oregon Leadership Institute.

The Pacific Northwest's private forests are a diverse mixture of ownership types that respond in different ways to market forces, economic change, and personal values. This presentation will paint a background of private forestland ownership in the Northwest and highlight examples of changes that have occurred and the diversity that exists within the private forest sector.
